Signal Quilt was a design I adapted from a sketch I made many years ago. One of the original inspirations were the bars that show signal strength on a cellphone. They were rotated to lay horizontally. There’s an interesting play of symmetry and asymmetry in the quilt. The individual bars are not equal in length nor are they proportionally the same. However, as a set, the top and bottom set of bars are the same – the bottom set is just flipped.

The pattern is designed to be an entry point for quilters coming from a traditional background, but interested in exploring modern. I noticed a trend that some experienced traditional quilters loved the modern aesthetic but felt intimidated to try a modern quilt. I wanted something that felt approachable to explore various elements of modern quilting – symmetry/asymmetry, negative space and transparency. It's also a great quilt for new and experienced modern quilters as it offers the opportunity to work on ¼” seam accuracy and open space to play with during quilting.

The quilt was constructed using Moda Bella Solids in Citrine, Pool, Spearmint and Dark Teal. I pieced the quilt using 50 wt Aurifil Thread 2026 (Mist). Thank you to Kristen Lee of
Mashe Modern who longarmed quilted Signal for me. We used the Geo Tiles #1 E2E pantograph because I wanted the quilting to look like stamps (think ink pad and stamps!) on the beautiful Citrine background.
